We have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure we are ready for GDPR and now with only a few months until it comes into effect, businesses have a lot to do and to prepare for so that they are fully compliant.
The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which comes into effect from 25 May 2018 will replace the current EU data privacy laws and the UK Data Protection Act 1998, significantly changing at a fundamental level, how all businesses treat data protection. Brexit makes no difference. Enhanced duties apply from the date above.
The GDPR sets out how an individual’s personal data can be used and will significantly change how businesses collect, store and process personal data. Citizens’ rights are enhanced. Business governance and accountability will also change.
Tough penalties will be levied on non-compliant businesses. Fines of up to €20 million or 4% of global turnover, whichever is higher, are at stake, along with the impact of negative publicity and reputational damage.
