Weekly Bulletin November 2011
Web search giant Google recently reported a large increase in third-quarter profits on Thursday 13th October. ‘People are flocking into Google Plus at an incredible rate’ said Google chief executive Larry Page, adding that the company had enjoyed a ‘great quarter’. Google claims that its budding social network platform is growing ‘at an incredible rate’ with users now reaching 40 million. The search engine said net income in the third quarter surged 26% to $2.73bn (£1.74bn), up from $2.17bn in the same period last year. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15300838) In the last three months Google profits were reported to be £6billion, with most of that income coming from Pay per Click advertising.
These reported profits reflect the huge amounts of money that businesses are investing with Google Pay per Click in order for their websites to appear high up in Google’s search engine. This is clearly a method of advertising that works for many businesses; as they go on to generate significant profits from their customers that the Pay per Click adverts bring them.
As the budding Google Plus social networking platform increases its membership, so does the LinkedIn user base. LinkedIn is now the world’s largest professional online social networking site, which grew to 115.8 million members by the end of the second quarter this year, an increase of 61 per cent from a year ago with Unique Visitors growing to 81.8million per month. LinkedIn profits are still relatively low, due to continual reinvestment in further growth. (http://gigaom.com/2011/08/04/linkedins-user-base-skyrockets-profits-not-so-much/)
Small businesses must not ignore the huge potential that Pay per Click advertising can offer, both on Google and on LinkedIn.
I currently use Google and LinkedIn to run my Pay per Click campaigns and have success with both sites. With more and more businesses now looking to use Social Media to help them acquire new business, I would strongly suggest that you look carefully into the ways that LinkedIn in particular can help you win new customers.
The beauty of LinkedIn means that you can advertise to highly targeted, pre-profiled groups of business professionals worldwide. This is where I feel LinkedIn has an advantage over Google Adwords, where you cannot focus your advertising on a specific group of people in your target market.
