It’s true that big businesses can dominate markets with low prices, large product ranges and mass marketing. But small firms have the edge when it comes to quality, service and exclusivity, believes Technology Sales and Marketing Coach, Terry Forsey.
“Being small does not have to be a barrier to success,” says Terry. “In fact, it can be a positive strength. Large organisations may seem to have many markets sewn up, but their one-size-fits-all approach to sales and marketing is not for everyone.
“But the key to being a successful business depends on the team of people that make up the organisation – they need to be content and enthusiastic to deliver a quality service. This is fundamental to productivity and profitability and it is essential that a business recruits and keeps the right people – this is a task in itself!”
To help clients, Terry – along with HR specialists, ‘The HR Tap’ - has published a white paper that looks at the staff procurement process and gives advice on how to select and retain the best people.
“Well-motivated employees are more productive, prepared to go further and are more creative, therefore providing better value for money’” says Melissa Ritchie, MD of The HR Tap. “If you talk to your employees regularly, you will understand their priorities and motivations. Try to match business needs, goals and expectations to those of the employees, then you can work with them to set challenging yet satisfying targets.”
Terry adds: “People are at the heart of most technology businesses, so it is worth the time and effort to ensure you have the right procedures to attract and retain the right people - the costs of getting it wrong are far more than interview expenses alone!”
