Terry Forsey Technology Sales and Marketing Coach

Top tips for Entrepreneurs

 News January 2008

Becoming a successful entrepreneur can be likened to taking part in the ‘Grand National’ – lots of horses and riders line up at the start, but many stumble at fences or fall by the wayside – few ever finish the race.

But Technology Sales and Marketing Coach, Terry Forsey, has some top tips for those jockeys who want to ensure they ‘make the running’ and end up in the ‘winners’ enclosure’ by reporting on six make or break factors essential when building a business.

“Many enterprising people branch out on their own as they feel that they can do a better job – and indeed this may be true – but the first crucial element of any business is having the ability to sell,” says Terry.  “Most business owners are reluctant sales persons and instead prefer to concentrate on their core technical abilities – but what is the point of that if you don’t have any customers who can take advantage of these skills?

“I also see that many new businesses do not properly price their product or service – often under selling themselves. Only a small proportion of customers buy on price alone, so it essential that the offering reflects the real value and at a fair price acceptable to both parties.”

The report also states that procrastination is a major ‘hurdle’ to developing businesses. Although these organisations are very capable in collecting information and good ideas, but they do tend to ‘park’ them instead of taking action immediately – often quoting a lack of time as the reason but, in reality this can be a fear of failure.

Terry also encourages a ‘think big’ attitude.  He says; “Set high targets and seek out people who have been successful – as they will encourage you to do the same. Throw away limitations and open up your mind.

“By considering such key factors when starting out, I believe you can prepare yourselves for the challenges ahead – to ensure you ‘back the winner’.”
